I talk a lot about ownership, empowerment, and getting into the driver’s seat with your health. I am a firm believer that the gold standard is strengthening your intuition and knowing what is best for you physically, mentally, and emotionally. That said, ownership over your health and support are not mutually exclusive. Connecting with a provider to walk alongside your journey or joining a community are equally as important, and can even help strengthen this sense of empowerment. Here are a few tips on finding community alongside your health journey:
Professional Group Programs
So you’ve done the work to find the right dietitian, therapist, or personal trainer, but are conflicted on taking part in 1:1 or group programming. There is a time and place for both, and group programming can have a lot of unique benefits. There is a reason you were probably drawn to the professional that you are working with, from the way they communicate or educate to the problems they solve. Because of this, you are probably likely to connect with other clients drawn to this professional too. The group program is often paced by the professional, so you would be learning and implementing the same things along with the other group members. The big benefit here is that the professional often gives the opportunity to ask questions in a call or facebook group. You’ll find that others will see things through a different lens than you, thus they will ask questions that you may not even think of.
Fitness Related Networking Groups
I started my first health focused networking group about 4 years ago, and I soon realized there are a lot of them. These groups can help you connect with your community, stay active, and support your goals in pretty much any area of your life. These often include different monthly events to really help you think outside the box regarding your health. I highly encourage you to really find your people/ a group that is right for you. I can help if you are in the Chicago or Naples, FL area!
Community Focused Fitness Studios
Sometimes it’s not just about the workout they provide, but the community they create. If you are in search of a new fitness studio, I highly encourage you to look into the community aspect, which is what is going to keep you coming back to the studio long term. Look into any events they have beyond just fitness to really bring their clients together.
Races, Fitness Festivals and More
These all have an amazing social aspect where you can connect with like minded people. Look into ways you can travel for races or fitness festivals, or even make it a tradition to go each year. These are great ways to meet new people, gain exposure to new brands, and work your way towards your goals.
Putting it all together
There is power in numbers, especially when it comes to working towards your goals. Surround yourself with people working towards a similar goal that may see things in a slightly different way- I guarantee you will learn something.
