Lab testing is great and seems to get all of the notoriety, but I often place just as much emphasis on a few other forms of biometrical screening. Although some people are more data-driven than others, having good solid evidence on what is going on in your body can be helpful in just about any case. This way we can have more of a target action plan initially and concrete proof that the actions we are taking are working with regular check-ins. Biometric screening keeps evolving, especially with the current biohacking culture in the wellness industry. Here are a few reliable tests to increase awareness and catalyze health change.
DEXA Scan
This test specifically dives into bone mineral density, muscle and fat mass. Many of my patients/ clients strength train, so this is a better indicator of progress instead of just weight when muscle and fat mass may be shifting. We need to look into what comprises that weight. DEXA scans can show us localized fat, particularly visceral fat, or fat that surrounds vital internal organs and can be linked to certain chronic diseases. Bone health and bone density is also something we rarely talk about from a preventative standpoint, and knowing the status of your bone density can really help you take preventative action. These scans can be taken at clinics, hospitals and specialized image centers. I often recommend Live Lean Rx for testing.
Heart Rate Variability
In very broad terms, heart rate variability is a good indicator of an individual’s adaptability to stress. It is an overall measure of the autonomic nervous system and measures the time variance between heart beats. It can be improved by challenging the body through strength or endurance based goals AND emphasizing rest and recovery. One of my most recommended wearables to track this is the Whoop, and I especially find the weekly and monthly reports helpful.
Creating a Healthy Relationship with Data and Tracking Tools
It’s no secret that technology in our world is only becoming more prominent, and is expected to escalate in the next few years. It’s great to embrace and get curious about new wellness technology while staying mindful and even taking breaks from the technology. Habits and actions are king, while these are simply tools to drive habits and create awareness. It is important to check in with biometrics at a healthy cadence and notice when you start to get obsessive or even when all of the logic and data starts to quiet your intuition. Your body is constantly sending you signals and you ultimately know what’s best for you.

During my free consultation, I deep dive into a “My Symptom Questionnaire” to take all of this to another level and really help you understand your body. All visits are telehealth and I do have insurance options.
