For those who are local, we are bringing back the metabolic assessments. One of my core values of my practice is individualization, and that certainly holds true to your metabolism. Testing can help us gain insight into how your metabolism functions so we can make targeted changes to your nutrition, lifestyle, supplementation, and movement. Although I like these tests for many reasons, it mainly comes down to 1. The Resting Metabolic Rate test can really show us the efficiency of your metabolism at rest, which is most of your day (so safe to say pretty important) 2. The VO2 test can show you your VO2 max, which is a reputable, valuable marker for longevity.
Each Test Explained Further
Resting Metabolic Rate Test
The resting metabolic rate test can show you the calories you burn at rest, and if you lean more towards fat burning or carbohydrate burning at rest. This shows us the minimum requirement for basic brain function, breathing, etc. This can help us determine your actual needs, and if we need adjustments to your nutrition, movement, stress relief toolbox, supplementation, and more to use your fuel more efficiently. This test is pretty simple, you breathe into a machine for about 20 minutes. This is always done fasted, so best if done in the morning.
VO2 Testing
This one is definitely tougher to complete, and you gradually increase effort in your cardio modality of choice until you “max out”. With this, again you can learn your current VO2 max, which is a great way to look into longevity/ overall health. In addition, you can gather valuable information about the heart rate range in which you are most efficient while working out. This can help you train smarter, and more individualized.
Ok, so what are the logistics?
All tests are done through 4 Star Endurance and done at Lakeshore Sport & Fitness- Illinois Center in Downtown Chicago. You can set up the tests directly through them or email me at dietitian@chelseastegmanrd.com and I can connect you directly to them. In addition, we have packages with testing and nutrition coaching that I would recommend, especially with the resting metabolic rate test. There is also an app associated with the test in which you can get the results directly to your phone. I encourage you to check out their site for example test results!
