If I had to pick one spice that I talk about with just about every patient/ client, it would without a doubt be turmeric. If I’m noticing any theme in the health world, it’s that we’re currently leaning into ancient wisdom for remedies and healing modalities. The use of turmeric goes along with this theme, as it has been used and valued in Ayurvedic medicine for years, and uniquely has strong science to back up its benefits. Its hallmark benefit is reducing inflammation, which can reach a myriad of more specific health benefits like reducing arthritis, cardiovascular inflammation, gut inflammation, and supporting the immune response in cases of autoimmunity. It also may support detoxification of the brain and liver. So, needless to say, this vibrant spice may be something that you want to implement on a regular basis. Let’s discuss how to work it in consistently for the full health benefits:
I absolutely love this brand. They’ve mindfully crafted a balanced mix of spices for the best turmeric lattes, turmeric lemonades, or a spicy version for a marinade or to roast veggies with. I often recommend their turmeric latte nightly as a consistent “wind down” that supports your inflammation levels. Curcumin Supplement
I often get asked what the difference is between curcumin and turmeric. Curcumin is a component of turmeric, and it’s pretty safe to say it’s the piece that does most of the legwork regarding the health benefits. Turmeric is complex and contains hundreds of compounds, and the curcuminoids are the compounds responsible for the deep yellow hue. Curcumin can be extracted from turmeric for a more potent and therapeutic way of reducing inflammation. If you’re working with me, we can discuss if curcumin supplementation is right for you.
Adding in Turmeric
It is helpful to always keep turmeric stocked in your spice cabinet, and find easy ways to subtly add it in. Some of these ways to sneak it in include adding it to your egg scramble, an easy go-to turmeric marinade, adding it to stir fry, and making a turmeric dressing. I encourage you to try all of these and keep them in a rotation.
Putting It All Together
The use of turmeric could benefit almost anyone, and most people initially notice a reduction in “puffiness” and subsequently longer term benefits. Try it out and let us know what you think!
